# Jobs Scoping (Ulwick / ODI)

Define the full scope of a customer's job-to-be-done by mapping the universal job process and layering in functional, emotional, and social dimensions to find innovation opportunities.

## Steps

1. **Define the core functional job** — State the main job the customer is trying to get done, using the format: [verb] + [object] + [contextual clarifier].
2. **Map the job steps** — Break the job into its universal process: Define, Locate, Prepare, Confirm, Execute, Monitor, Modify, Conclude.
3. **Identify related jobs** — List adjacent functional jobs the customer performs before, during, or after the core job.
4. **Layer emotional and social jobs** — For each step, capture how the customer wants to feel (emotional) and how they want to be perceived (social).
5. **Surface desired outcomes** — Write outcome statements per step: "Minimize the likelihood of [undesired outcome]" or "Increase the speed of [desired outcome]."

## Output Format

A job map table with columns: Job Step, Functional Need, Emotional Job, Social Job, and Desired Outcome statements. Include a summary of the highest-opportunity areas.
